The world increasingly recognizes it’s current state with an honest intent to stage a difference. To see ‘Green’ today is an ideology that supercedes individual preferences and is rooted in the interrelationship between people and the environment we often take for granted. This wisdom has graciously percolated into the world of furniture.

Wood is scarce and its safeguarding of prime importance. Turning the tables on materialism and restraining from taking from the environment is the new code.
The growing understanding that old, throwaway and discarded pieces can find their way back in ones living room endorses the view that furniture that has seen its best days can see better. With some ingenuity, imagination and conscience it can be reborn. Commonly known as Green Design. These designs are socially directed rather than commercially motivated. The wood is restored by environmentally –friendly techniques that keep its quality and beauty intact and convert an unwanted chair into a cabinet of desire.

In addition to this is the use of chemical-free raw wood in ones furniture. Pressure treated woods can contain toxic chemicals that may result in causing harm. This heightens the importance of using raw wood and also preservation of woods with techniques that are risk-free.
WTP takes necessary care in its materials and greets those who are looking at recycling their existing furniture. The restoration team at WTP examines the piece and works closely with its customers in the re- creation process. With a combination of dexterity, playfulness and freedom new expressions are fashioned. ‘Restore rather than Store’ being their operating mantra.

Along with the larger view of saving the world, re-using furniture comes with the dual benefit of saving money as well. Moving costs, new furniture costs and even simply discarding it come with a dollar value, which can be exempted. This efficient, economical and utilitarian approach is certainly not devoid of creativity. This movement will hopefully see a new meaning of ‘green’ – from a culture of materialism that made people turn green with envy to preservation that makes people turn green with responsibility.

Living in the balance. And now if one were to step inside these spaces, a comment suggesting ‘these apartments are smaller than last time’ are likely to be uttered. This is the shape for the future. A representation of the new modern and a result of ‘machine’ culture. Now when one has to bring these spaces to life through the aesthetic embracement of furniture, a minimilistic, straight-lined view is encouraged. All wooden furniture is sometimes thought to be too ‘heavy’ and steel which integrates beautifully into such environments considered to be too ‘cold’. In a democratic integration of taste, functionality and environmental impact one can find a middle-ground that sustains as the future of design. A balance between the ‘warm; and ‘cold’, between permanent and transient, between nature and consumer dominated culture, between technology and craft can synthesise into something that is dynamic and enriching. The interweave of the warmth wood and precision of steel materials into furniture pieces is an example that has found great acceptance in defining the desired modern décor. A first instinct would even suggest a Scandinavian feel. Using such mixed materials presents limitless possibilities in design imagination and celebrates playfulness and complexity. It should be noted that mixed does not mean impure and in fact a table with a smooth light-wood top surface with precise geometric steel legs or a lounge chair with wooden borders and steel linings are cases in point of new aesthetic purity.Working with materials in the exploration of discovering something new that accommodates well into today’s homes is a manufacturers delight. As the livingscape of Singapore changes on the exterior, the inventiveness of the interior ensures that it keeps pace in making sure that life is always lived in the balance. Beautifully.

History. For example, the eighteenth century mahogany sideboard expressed hospitality, while the curvaceous cabriole leg spoke to the quest for ideal beauty. In these ways forms, materials and motifs communicated a variety of cultural meanings as each piece established itself with majestic value for the times and environments they were created. They stood tall in design fantasy as well as for the specific functional and social purposes they were created be it dinning, working or conversing. In the present day, this beauty of the past may however sometimes be relegated to being art pieces or seem like misplaced museum items as they lose their functional and form relevance in modern living spaces. Smaller living places, changing tastes, new geographies, shifting and adaptive cultures demand new furniture grammar. However, modern living does not mean the burial of all things old. Here’s where historical pieces can probe into newly revealed functions, incorporate modern materials and expand its range of meaning. They can yet remain true to their tradition and find new definitions and contexts. The finest furniture makers are able to realise and incorporate a pre-existing form into a new contemporary statement capable of standing on its own merits. Liberties are taken with the original piece through insightful inspiration and are beautifully adapted into modern settings. The art of discovering new meaning to old symbols has been masterfully undertaken by the craftsmen of WTP as they have re-appropriated some fine classics. Take for example the beautiful hand-carved teak door. This palatial door of Royal India was painstakingly and innovatively recoded to a table that now lives to tell a new tale. Narrowing the view between today and the past was also brilliantly embarked on by the experts at WTP with conversion of an old ornate chest into a glass top bar which today stands as a conversation piece around conversations. Besides, the magic and mystique that surrounds the craftsmanship is unparalleled. The intricacies, detail and originality of the craft are deeply pronounced of a time that possessed a daring purity. Matching these subtleties and high standards set by the original artisans by the modern craftsmen for certain refurbishing elements is a true challenge. This ‘revival’ of past into the present is a tribute to the brilliance of tradition as it commands and deserves the respect to integrate into ones life with new function, structure and form.
